Tom Waits’ attempt to spark a small revival of interest in the 78 rpm format is underway, but the singer also has some other concerns to take care of. Chief among those is a book of poetry he is publishing, which has been made in collaboration with photographer Michael O’Brien and will be issued in March next year.
The book is titled Hard Ground and will include O’Brien’s photographs of homeless people alongside Waits’ prose. According to the University of Texas Press website, the book aims to “create a portrait of homelessness that impels us to look into the eyes of people who live “on the hard ground” and recognize our common humanity.”
Sample pages from the book can be viewed here, and pre-orders are already being taken on Amazon over here. Now can we have a proper Tom Waits album, please? The man is always busy working on various projects, but it’s been over six years since the last proper Waits album, Real Gone, was issued.
