From simple, sweet four-track bedroom recordings to impressive, full-band funk freakouts, Of Montreal’s nearly 16 year-long career has spanned a weird and wide expanse of genres and aesthetic credos.
Now, the Athens, GA-based group wants to compile hundreds of hours of footage into a feature-length documentary, titled Song Dynasties. To do so, the band needs some cash to put finishing touches on the material — so, naturally, here’s where crowdsourcing site Kickstarter comes into play.
According to the band, Song Dynasties will include filmed performances from a handful of Of Montreal’s festival appearances, as well as previously unreleased footage from the earliest days of the group.
Fans who pledge $30 will receive a limited edition, hand-numbered copy of Song Dynasties on vinyl. For a bit more cash ($1,000, to be exact) one lucky Of Montreal devotee will be given the extraordinarily outlandish 10 ft. dress worn by frontman Kevin Barnes during the Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? tour and the “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse” video. Other incentives include vinyl test pressings, band merch and a limited-release LP of early Of Montreal recordings.
