Yikes. Late Thursday night the Handsome Furs, husband/wife duo of Alexei Perry and Wolf Parade auteur Dan Boeckner announced that they’re breaking up their band.
A post on the band’s official Facebook quietly informs “with a heavy heart the time has come to let all of you know that Handsome Furs are no more, the most important thing that needs to be said right now is how to all the fans all over the world that showered us with support over the years.”
Meanwhile the band’s label Sub Pop offers the terse “The Handsome Furs are finished. We will not be [nor will Dan] be elaborating any further on the matter.”
A few months ago the Furs cancelled a European tour due to an “urgent health issue,” there’s no word on whether the split is tied to that. There’s also no word on the status of Boeckner and Perry’s relationship. Not to sound overly glossy, but the vague “health issues” story in the shadow of an unexpected break leaves obvious implications. We probably won’t know the real reason for a while (if ever,) and Dan and Alexei will certainly be in our thoughts, watching them make-out on stage was one of the more provocative and charming tics in indie rock. We here at Prefix certainly hope their health and their relationship is okay.
Furthermore, it’s been a pretty awful couple of years for Wolf Parade fans. First the parent band goes on an indefinite hiatus and now this, we certainly hope Montreal’s favorite indie-rock sons feel better soon. [TLOBF]
