Girl Talk Considering Making an Album with Real Songs

Girl Talk’s relentless mashup style certainly has its fans and detractors (I come down somewhere in the middle), with some finding how he essentially crams 47 songs into four minutes without consideration for thematic fit annoying. In an interview with Billboard, Girl Talk, aka Greg Gillis, is suggesting he might switch up his established sound, and actually make mashups with real song structure:

I’m experimenting with different structures and different ideas,” Gillis said. “I’m interested in working on individual songs — kind of in the style I’ve been doing, but with actual repetition as opposed to linear structure and stuff like that, some elements with a verse-and-chorus sort of structure as opposed to going through 50 minutes of change-ups the entire time. I want to evolve and keep refining.”

The promise of limiting the amount of samples could bode well, since one of Gillis’ best songs is the Clipse/Grizzly Bear mashup of “Knife” and “Wamp Wamp (What it Do)” (below). No word on when this new refinement will hit shelves, but Gillis says he’s hard at work on music every day. He also mentioned perhaps releasing live performances, since those are more off the cuff and free-flowing.  [Billboard]
