Jason Isbell first hit the the musical radar as the wunderkind songwriter/guitarist for the Drive-By Truckers. He left the band in 2007 and has been working hard ever since to forge a musical identity other than "the guy who used to be in the Drive-By Truckers." He released a solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, soon after leaving the Truckers and then hit the road. Isbell grew comfortable enough with his backing band that his second album is credited to Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. The group is heading out on tour for over two hundred shows in 2009, hoping to convert fans town by town. Isbell has this to say about the mammoth undertaking:
"Sure, there are times when you get tired of the grind, and that’s when you know you’ve been on the road too long. But this is your job as well as your life and something you love. People get up every day and go to work doing things a lot harder and less enjoyable than playing music, so there’s no way I’d ever complain about what we do."
