Finally (right?), Billboard has a new chart dedicated to songs that get played the most on streaming music services like Rdio, Spotify, MOG, and several others. It’s called the On-Demand Songs chart and the data collected for it will also be factored into Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart. Apparently they decided to do this once Nielsen SoundScan, the company that gathers the data, realized that, well, a shitload of people listen to music on-demand. According to a press release, Nielsen “captured more than 4.5 billion audio streams” through the first 70 days of 2012. The chart was also created in collaboration with Digital Music.
