Russian Prime Minister Supports Pussy Riot Release

BBC is reporting that Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev believes that Pussy Riot staying incarcerated for hooliganism is “unproductive”. The announcement comes in time for their upcoming appeal scheduled for October 1. Here’s more of his statement:

“The punishment they have already endured being held in prison conditions for a quite significant time is fully enough to make them think about what happened, because of their stupidity or some other reasons…”

Pussy Riot was sentenced to a total of two years in prison after reading a punk prayer that opposed Vladimir Putin in a Russian Orthodox Church back on February 21.

The Pussy Riot trial and verdict has sparked a series of protests in support of their release, and public statements from musicians like Paul McCartney, Green Day, Bjork, and Madonna. Members of the collective not in prison released an appreciative video thanking the bands and the protestors for their support. [Photo via Misha Japaridze]
