Despite a notorious appearance on the Howard Stern show during which the King of All Media declared the band's 2008 album, Arms, "mood music if you're in a mental home," the Brooklyn trio Zs has continued to churn out its distinctive take on experimental/out/free music. New Slave is the band's second for the Social Registry label, and it displays more of the band's frenetic minimalism and cerebral texturalism. Challenging and potentially divisive, it's also rooted in a long tradition of experimental music that includes John Cage and Anthony Braxton on the one hand and even contemporaries such as Battles on the other.
