The 16 cover tunes (and one bonus track) here run the gamut from blissful (Joy Zipper’s “Just Like Heaven”) to abysmal (the Wedding Present’s overwrought “High”). This newest addition to the growing list of Cure tribute CDs was put together by American Laundromat Records and includes renditions of everyone’s mope rock favorites by Dean & Britta (“Friday I’m in Love”), the Brunettes (“Lovesong”), the Submarines (“Boys Don’t Cry”), Tanya Donelly & Dylan in the Movies (“The Lovecats”), the Rosebuds (The Walk”) and others. Jokes aside, if nothing else, this disc will remind you what a brilliant – and consistent – songwriter Robert Smith is. No matter how weak or weird the interpretations, there’s no escaping what great tunes these still are.
