Tim Berne's BMI is "Tim Berne party music," which this double CD most definitely is not (unless the host is serving a lot of cocaine). The Sublime And is a live recording of an exhaustingly long Science Friction Band live performance in Switzerland. As opposed to many of Thirsty Ear's Blue Series releases, there's not much fusion happening here, save a little Craig Taborn laptop ambience and David Torn's superb production. This is way-free jazz: crushing, pummeling, overwhelming music that makes you feel small. Berne will wear you out -- his alto sax solos are marathons and Taborn's dizzying keyboard work is comparably maximalist. Sometimes a little too "jamming," but always completely smoking.
