Why can't all things Canadian be as satisfying as The Kids in the Hall or Molson Golden? These Manitoba alt-rockers in The Sylmarillion have been alt-rocking since 1998, presumably nicking a bit of every watered-down grunge act that has come along since then. Their long player is rather dull but loaded with bold risks. One such risk is "Mi Amor," whereby singer Tim Riedel tries his hand at a ballad in Spanish. It's as authentic as a Kate Spade knockoff, unfortunately, and it may even be offensive to the band's non-English speaking followers. I'm assuming here that the band has any following at all, and I suppose that's bold on my part. Boring alternative rock a la Bush with extended guitar workouts. Traditional alternative rock and not a lick of original thought. Minus one for north of the border.
