Even when he was focusing on Rage Against the Machine and later Audioslave, Tom Morello always had a slew of side hustles. He lent his guitar work to acts such as Primus, the Prodigy, and Atari Teenage Riot while sitting in on tours and producing tracks and albums. Additionally, Morello was slowly building his solo career as the Nightwatchman. His protest-folk tunes officially made their debut in 2007 with the release of One Man Revolution, which he followed up quickly the next year with The Fabled City.

Because of a slightly busier schedule thanks to his starting Street Sweeper Social Club with rapper Boots Riley, Morello took a bit more time with his third Nightwatchman effort, World Wide Rebel Songs. That gap in releases also allowed for him to land a new record deal. He left Epic and, as of March 2011, signed with New West Records, which is also home to Old 97's, Robert Ellis, and Steve Earle.
