The Lord Dog Bird is the solo project of Colin McCann, guitarist for Wilderness, a band that also records for Jagjaguwar. McCann worked on this album while Wilderness was on extended hiatus. The music here is more quiet and introspective than the wooly noise that Wilderness cooks up. The project's name is a slight take off from "Lord God bird," a colloquial name for a disputed species of woodpecker in the American south. Sufjan Stevens wrote a song about the fowl for NPR in 2005. Like Stevens, McCann seems to be following a path of self-discovery and spirituality here, especially on songs like "Walking (With You)" and "The Gift of Song in the Lion's Den."
