Review

A dizzy twist of lilting boy-girl vocals blurred within agile chamber-popped desert pop, the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra’s Escapements EP is a wearied and gorgeous funneling of Zombies-style psych-pop and Scott Walker-esque eclectica into the band’s own hallucinatory and meticulously produced sonic panoramas.

Dreamy and baroque, the record seamlessly blends mid-century vocal pop acoustics to a modern indie aesthetic. The results -- including the breathless gallop of dizzy propulsion on “Don’t Be Fooled”  and the beautiful, slow-motion whirlpool of “In a Dream” -- sound just as likely to have spun from some Rhino rerelease of a lost classic as they are from a modern one.
