Hot on the heels of Vivian Girls, comes Atlanta's The Coathangers. The all-female riot grrrl-referencing quartet ruffled some feathers on their potty-mouthed self-titled debut. Recording songs entitled "Nestle in My Boobies" and "Shut the Fuck Up" tends to turn heads. The phone bank riff of breakout single "Don't Touch My Shit" helped too. The raucous track also brought to mind The Slits working at a cubicle. Since that Office Space-life nightmare, Julia Kugel (guitar/vocals), Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals), Candice Jones (keyboard/vocals), and Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) have been shredding their vocal chords on several 7" singles and in support of Black Lips and Marnie Stern. Their sophomore album, entitled Scramble, sees the screeching feminists sign to Suicide Squeeze. The new songs still maintain The Coathangers' call and response caterwauling (whoa!) but now they foursome's matured and purchased slightly better equipment."We write all the songs together, trying everything out within a day; we switch instruments, waste time, thrive on building pressure," says Julia Kugel, "every song is an art project, a starting over, a Scramble."
