Named after the Chrysler Building's famed penthouse club, Brooklyn's the Cloud Room, in spare moments, recalls the ghostly energy of evenings among a forgotten jet set. But without potent melodies to make it rise above other '80s revivalists, the band's eponymous debut spends as much time at ground level as it does scraping the sky. "Hey Now Now" has a calculated commercial sheen as hard to shake as the chorus, and the nervy "Blackout" could be mistaken for Hot Hot Heat. It's when the band's glam influences creep through, as with "Beautiful Mess" and "The Hunger," that The Cloud Room reaches its heights.
