Soul Jazz continues to impress by exploring the catalog of erstwhile reggae premier Studio One. Scorchers, Volume 2 picks up where its predecessor left off and explores the label’s instrumental sides. Of course, the artist roster resembles that of Volume 1-the Skatalites, Soul Dimension, Brentford Road All Stars, et cetera-but to no bother, because the dig is deeper and the goodies more curious. Volume 2 further demonstrates the diversity of instrumental reggae, from the revision of Memphis’s muddy backbeat on Vin Gordon’s soulful “Sidewalk Doctor” to the light calypso vamping on Sugar Belly’s salacious “Cousin Joe, Pt. 1.” Highlights include Jackie Mittoo’s electric relaxation of William DeVaughn’s already relaxed “Be Thankful” on “A Big Car” and the mildly disorienting raga-holiday mega-mix of “After Christmas.” Dennis Morris and Adrian Boot contribute liners and photography.
