American Central Dust, Son Volt's sixth LP, favors the more traditional country style of their first album, Trace, rather than the broader instrumentation of 2007's The Search. Jay Farrar told music blog Aquarium Drunkard that "there was a conscious effort to keep the song arrangements and structures more straightforward." As far as songwriting goes, expect the usual Farrar fare of rust belt dust-ups, blue collar workers and longing for love--with one exception, "Cocaine and Ashes," which is about Keith Richards' infamous use of his father's remains.
