SJ Esau is the performing name of one Sam Wisternoff. Wisternoff hails from the U.K., and Small Vessel is his sophomore full-length, the follow-up to 2006's oddly named Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse. Wisternoff throws disparate sounds together the same way he threw together words in that record's name. He works at the fringes of pop, dance, and rock music, much like many other performers that share his Anticon home. Think of him as a British Beck, if you must. Cello and backing vocals on the album are provided by Charlotte Nichols, who also appeared on Portishead's Third.
