No longer a member of Okkervil River, Jonathan Meiburg is now focusing full-time on Shearwater. Rook is the follow-up to Palo Santo, which was originally released in 2006 and re-released with bonus tracks last year on Matador, Shearwater's new home. Meiburg's material seems more in tune with nature than Will Sheff's relationship tales, especially on Rook songs like "On the Death of the Waters," "The Snow Leopard," and "Rooks." (Meiburg is a big birding fan.) The album is short in length - only about 35 minutes - but its songs are all epic in scale.
