She Wolf

Abstract

The undeniably sexy video for Shakira's lead single, "She Wolf," already burned up computer and TV screens across America with its electro-pop chic. John Hill's slinky production probably helped. The Colombian Latin-pop singer-songwriter's mid-career sea change from latin pop and rock to electro pop stemmed from her introduction to a live wire act such as Crystal Castles. “They’re a good example of how electronica can take you to different places," she said to Rolling Stone. The sultry pop star also explores some dancehall on top of her slithery conflations of African, Colombian, Indian and Middle Eastern pop. Shakira produced She Wolf with songwriter-producer RedOne, as well as hip-hop/pop producers Pharrell Williams, The Neptunes, Amanda Ghost, Lukas Burton, Future Cut, Jerry Duplessis, Sam Endicott, John Hill and previous collaborator Wyclef Jean. This is her third English studio LP and the follow-up to 2005's Oral Fixation Vol. 2. It was recorded during a series of 12-hour-a-day sessions mostly in the Bahamas.
