Norwegian shoegazers Serena Maneesh follow up their 2005 self-titled debut with S-M 2: Abyss in B Minor, their first release on 4AD records. Recorded in a cave on the outskirts of Oslo, Abyss is a concise, 38-minute demonstration of overpowering distortion, breathy vocals and all kinds of other things that will get a band compared to My Bloody Valentine. Despite its obvious influences, Abyss is by no means derivative and a fine example of Serena Maneesh's heavy, uniquely Norwegian spin on the typical shoegaze sound. Did I mention it was recordedin a cave?
