More Sabbath and Nirvana than coffeehouse fare, Scout Niblett's third full-length, Kidnapped by Neptune, is explosive, mysterious and refreshingly strange. Like Nirvana back in utero with a weird disco fetish and no guitars, the title track doesn't set the mood -- it screams "Get ready." Niblett plays nearly all the instruments herself, and from distorted Soundgarden jam ("Handsome") to hypnotic funk cheering squad ("Safety Pants"), Neptune is constantly on the fringe of several genres -- a accessible, but never safe. Her voice may remind some of Bjork or Chan Marshall ("Hot to Death," "Pompoms"), but Neptune makes it clear that Niblett is no copycat. An album as strong and independent as this needs no contemporaries.
