Manning is the eclectic 1960s disciple who helmed the beloved-by-critics bands Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, the Moog Cookbook and TV Eyes (he’s also worked with everyone from Beck to Air to Morrissey). For his sequel to the 2006 solo effort The Land of Pure Imagination, he recalls everyone from David Bowie to vintage Beatles, while still bringing in loads of his personal quirkiness and distinctive keyboard sounds. The CD, which does not scrimp on playing time, is further elongated by several live bonus tracks, including a non-electronic rendering Thomas Dolby’s “Europa and the Pirate Twins” and a larger-than-life cover of Elton John’s “Love Lies Bleeding.”
