Rob Thomas initially wanted to make an updated version of Paul Simon’s Rhythm of the Saints for his sophomore effort, but instead opted to stay closer in his comfort zone, centering the songs around troubled relationships. The album’s first single is “Her Diamonds,” but Thomas’s initial inspiration is found on “Fire on the Mountain,” which features tribal drums and is inspired by Dave Eggers’ What Is the What.
