Road to the Riches: The Best of the Purple City Mixtapes

Purple City, a New York City crew that’s tight with the Diplomats, has been dropping mixtapes left and right for a good minute now, selling more than 80,000 of them. Good, right? Well, maybe not. Road to the Riches: The Best of the Purple City Mixtapes, their first official mixtape, features some killer beats and guest spots from Diplomats Jim Jones and Juelz Santana and a few others, but it lacks just as much as it has going for it. Killer tracks are few and far between: “Purple City Byrd Gang” gets propped up by Jim Jones, and “Gun Go” is mainly a winner because it brings out the entire crew, plus Jones and Santana.

Maybe the future will be brighter for the Byrd Gang — comprised of Shiest Bub, Un Kasa and Agallah — because the potential is obvious. With the Dipset Seal of Approval and some focused energy in the studio, the sparse nuggets featured here could potentially stretch across an entire album and do some damage. But most of this mixtape is kids’ stuff — mostly decent beats with sub-par rhymes.
