Red Sparowes has always been placed firmly in the camp of heavier rockers like Neurosis, Pelican, and Isis (with whom they share a couple members). But the band sets itself apart with the subtle twang courtesy of Greg Burns's pedal steel guitar. Its music has never had the hard edge of a band like Neurosis, which has made its appearance on that band's Neurot Recordings seem odd. For its third record, however, it has moved to Sargent House, which features bands like the Russian Circles that are a bit more similar in sound. The band has also dropped the frustratingly long song titles of its first two records and added a member, Emma Ruth Rundle of the Nocturnes. The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer was engineered by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Businees, Tool).
