After showcasing his penchants for new jack swing with Tony! Toni! Tone! and soul/R&B with Lucy Pearl, Raphael Saadiq set out on his own in 2002 with Instant Vintage. And since then, the singer-songwriter/producer progressed from a more neo soul-esque/funk vibe to throwback soul/R&B with his fourth and fifth albums, The Way I See It and Stone Rollin'. Much like its predecessor, Stone Rollin' is steeped in soul. But where The Way I See It dabbled in Motown, Stone Rollin' finds itself flirting with 1950s doo-wop to offer another new take on a classic part of music history.
