For a side project, Portastatic has amassed quite a back catalogue. Always the little brother to Mac McCaughan's other band, Superchunk, Portastatic has nonetheless become a revered entity in its own right over the years. McCaughan, who is also a guiding force behind Merge Records, is cleaning out closets with Some Small History, which is not small by any means. It's a two-CD, 44-track collection of rarities, covers, B-sides, EPs, compilation tracks, unreleased songs, and otherwise hard to track down ephemera. Included are Portastatic's takes on Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," Hot Chip's "And I Was a Boy from School," and Galaxie 500's "Tugboat."
