Polly Scattergood's self-titled debut is a good first step in breaking the stranglehold that rude, heavily-accented artists currently have on England's female singer-songwriter racket. Sure, Polly Scattergood sings in an accent too, but there's a healthy dose of menace heaped in her work, along with the usual fragility and hurt. She's proof that good things can happen when a girl decides that she's not everything nice.
