Review

Pixies' Minotaur may just be a boxed set, but it's not another one of those boorish ol' reissues. You know the kind I'm talking about: expensive boxes that regurgitate easily found tracks that fans of the band probably already own three of by now. Or is it? Minotaur is a boxed-set reissue of the band's four full-lengths and debut EP with extra art created by the artists who did the original covers: Vaughan Oliver and Simon Larbalestier. This Pixies box may not be entirely novely but it sure is glitzy. The set is issued by Artist in Residence, which decided not to tamper with the audio on the band's albums. Sorry, no remastering, kiddos.

The deluxe edition includes all five Pixies studio albums: Come On Pilgrim (1987), Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990), and Trompe le Monde (1991), all on 24k layered CD and Blu-ray (five discs total). Also included in the slipcase will be a DVD of the Pixies performing in 1991 at London's Brixton Academy, the group's music videos, some live tracks, and a 54-page book. The Minotaur limited edition will include everything in the deluxe, as well as all five albums on 180 gram vinyl, a Giclee print of Oliver's artwork, and a 72-page hardcover book, all snug in an oversize custom clamshell cover. And for all you penny pinchers out there (read: many of you reading this), you can find the monetary breakdown for two expensive editons here.
