Even the most optimistic and patchouli-ed amongst the Phish faithful couldn't have anticipated this; after reuniting for a three-night set in Virginia before launching a full-on reunion tour, Phish dropped into a studio with Steve Lillywhite to cut Joy, a ten-track album slated for release in 2009/2010. The first single from the set released was "Time Turns Elastic," a 10-minutes plus epic about lead Phishman Trey Anastasio's struggle with drugs. It's obviously not an anti-drug screed (Phish know not to bight the hacky sack-carrying hand that feeds them), but it sprawls in a way Phish do live but often don't on record. The stated purpose of Joy is to capture what it is like to see Phish perform, but also for Anastasio to get things off his chest (like his aforementioned drug problems and the death of his sister), which is a complete 180 from doing songs about the volleyball from Cast Away.
u tools ... vermont????

If you think Wilson is about a volleyball from a movie made more than 10 years after the song was written, you're a moron and you shouldn't be trusted for information. time for a new job.

please rewrite this article or just remove it from your website, this is awful

Bight? i'd suggest using spell check or proof reading before you put this up.
jmmmm
"Bight"? Really? Whether a fan of Phish or not, this review is terrible. It's written horribly and doesn't tell me anything about the music being reviewed.

I was not aware that Prefix allows writers to spew and wrong information that they choose. Wilson is about the volleyball from Castaway, ya ok. This guy is an absolute moron. Stay away from Phish. I hope you get dosed.
YouSuck
Worst abstract ever. Please cancel this article. Writer is obviously very misinformed.

wow...youre not the sharpest knife in the drawer are you?
wilson was written in 1983, but good try. Maybe you should try some 'creative writing' or something. Information is certainly not your bag.

You're a stupid, stupid man. You obviously know VERY little about Phish, so in the future please refrain from critiquing an article that just reeks of stinky ass N00BISH CRAP. Stick to reviewing whatever trite, mundane albums you would normally listen to, and leave the Phish reviews to people who actually know what the hell they're writing about.
Thanks schmuck.
Dave
this is the absolute worst website, and your captchas are strait up mean.
alex borsody
bight?
Matthew
yeah, I hope this really isn't music journalism going on here, terrible
Yahooti
yeah, the abstract has some errors, but wow the backlash from phish fans is nuts! Andross I commend you for covering the album at all, a lot of indie-centric blogs like to pretend that Phish doesn't exist, which is really quite stilted, considering the very independent rise that they had and the devoted following they have. Phish will be remembered fondly by critics and vanguard musicians in twenty years. Plus there's the following quote to shake up perceptions of their influences and aesthetic:
"Loveless is the best album recorded in the 90s" -- Trey Anastasio

Please try again!

Dear Andrew Winistorfer,
Kindly bight my hacky sack.

Wilson
Perhaps the facts were not clear to him because of all the "Foam" ??
Simon
Mr. Winistorfer, sir, you are an idiot. Aside from an anemic review lacking in any informative opinions regarding the actual music on the album, you say Phish wrote 'Wilson' about the volleyball in Castaway? Do some f--king research asswipe. Wilson is a song about a man who takes over a land and it's people. You could have figured that out by just listening to the lyrics of the song once. And like everyone else said in response to this ridiculous barely informative album review, ever heard of spell check? bight? Sheesh.
honu
Joy sould be labeled Undermind Pt. 2- and it is just as bad and awfully produced as the past 3 albums. Good lord just reture and go away. you were the best band on the planet, and it's obvious drugs had a lot to do with that.
Joy sucks...
Journalist is a ******* Wilson is not a volleyball. Cash your writing paycheck and buy a clue. Review SUCKS!!!

Got this article in my head where a blank space in my mind should be....
Col. Forbin
This is pathetic!! Obviously this nerd doesn't know what's UP!!!
TaHOEphan
Dear article writer,
You forgot to mention Tweezer is about plucking your eyebrows, Roggae is a tribute to bob marley, and Reba is about the country singer. Oh, and Phish wrote Wilson 10 years before the movie. However, Tom Hanks had a premonition (sp?) in 1987 he would do a movie about a volleyball named Wilson and drove to Vermont to have Phish write the theme song. I don't even want to tell you what Down with Disease is about...it would blow your mind.....
Nicculus
I'm not a violent man, but this review makes me want to do very bad things.
Orenthal James Simpson
I'm with OJ - and Nicculus - you're a clever dude/dudette.....this reviewer couldn't be more ignorant. The album is one of the most brilliant studio recordings phish has ever done......can we say douche bag in a review?
Cindycrawford
I've been insulted by your ignorance. Cast Away? Come on dude, Don't make up your own facts dude, it just makes you look like an idiot
Shawn
Ha, look at the phans up in arms. How bout someone give their opinion of the album? It is really hard to judge the songs before seeing them live, although I went back and youtubed some of the songs that I heard last summer and used that time to get a beer and take a piss since I didn't recongnize the music. I give it an 5 out of 10. I could listen to any track twice in a row, but there isn't a standout track that I can't get enough of. Hopefully that will change once a few more live versions get on my itunes.
At least the reviewer knew that a song names "wilson" was a phish staple...haha
