Bassist Darin Gray and percussionist Glenn Kotche first played together after they were recruited by Jim O'Rourke to record 1999's Eureka. On Fillmore was conceived shortly afterward, and they have been releasing rhythm-based records for almost a decade now. Far from being full of the expected complex time changes and shows of dexterity, however, On Fillmore are quite simple, and about as ambient as percussion-based music can get. Extended Vacation is an extension of this propensity toward the avant-garde. In addition to the drums, vibraphones and xylophones, it also incorporates a variety of smaller instruments and field recordings-- for instance, the duo even recorded their friend Dede Sampaio doing bird calls inside of a grain silo.
