Everybody loves a good sequel. And so it is that Austin, Texas country/folky indie-rock band Okkervil River is offering up The Stand Ins, the follow up to 2007's rich, cinematic The Stage Names. Band leader Will Sheff was apparently always eyeing the couplet as a double album, but decided to stagger the release of its two halves because of the whiff of pretentiousness that tends to accompany two-LP sets. "Starry Stairs" continues the story of Stage Names' "Savannah Smiles," while on "Lost Coastlines," Sheff and Jonathan Meiburg sing about the trials and tribulations of band life. That's ironic, since, after The Stand Ins, was completed, Meiburg decided to leave Okkervil River to focus on his own band, Shearwater. Charles Bissell of the Wrens, who routinely tours with Okkervil River, also played on the album. The Stand Ins was recorded in Austin with Okkervil River's longtime studio collaborator, Brian Beattie.
