This second album by German technical death metal quartet Obscura was easily one of the most hyped extreme metal releases of early '09. By pedigree alone (two former members of Necrophagist and an ex-member of Pestilence), this particular lineup had some pretty high stakes set, and guest spots by Tymon Kruidenier (Cynic) and Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower/Spastic Ink) only heightened the pre-release saliva. If you love ridiculously tight Atheist-style riffing, melodic sweep-picking solos, fusion breakdowns and fretless bassists that refuse to settle for a supporting role, Cosmogenesis became your favorite album of 2009 before you ever heard it.
