Amidst a string of mixtapes, both solo and collaborative with frequent coworker Joell Ortiz, in 2009 and 2010, Novel was also working on a proper studio album. Like most artists in hip-hop, he utilized projects, such as 2010's Legato Summer Blues, to keep his buzz strong and showcase his direction leading to Calligraphy. The album offers a blend of hip-hop, R&B, and soul with Novel producing, singing, and rapping throughout. It also features guests such as crooner Colin Munroe, the aforementioned Ortiz, and several other like-minded artists.
