The idea of Nellie McKay doing a album full of Doris Day covers seems so obvious that it's a wonder it took McKay five years to do it. While McKay has an affinity for being acerbic and sarcastic at times, when she's at her best there has always been a sweet bubbly charm that recalls the innocence of Tin Pan Alley pop. The title of the album is taken from a lyric in "Wonderful Day," which is included here, along with an original song,"If I Ever Had A Dream," written by McKay in tribute to Doris Day. The album's release on Verve Records also serves as a return of sorts to major labels after McKay's public falling out with Columbia and dealing with independents for her last two releases.
