You might not know the name Neil Halstead, but chances are you've heard music from the bands Halstead has been a vital member of. In the late '80s and early '90s, he was a shoegazer in the British band Slowdive. He retooled the membership of that band to form Mojave 3, a group that trades in a more folky Americana sound. Even though Halstead and fellow Mojave 3 member Rachel Goswell record as solo artists, the band is still together, last releasing the somewhat glammed up Puzzles Like You in 2006. Oh! Mighty Engine is Halstead's second solo album, after the underappreciated 2002 gem Sleeping on Roads. Halstead worked on the album both in Los Angeles and Cornwall, England. Oh! Mighty Engine is Halstead's first album for Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records; the two bonded over a mutual love of surfing.
