Mulatu Astatke is the pioneer of Ethio jazz, which takes Western jazz constructs and infuses them with Ethiopian modes and melodies. He was largely overlooked in America until recently, when he had an installment of the Ethiopiques series dedicated to him and his music was featured on the soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers. The Story of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975 is the first comprehensive retrospective of Astatke's work during his formative early years. Compiled with full access to his recordings on each of the labels he worked for, this collection follows the progression of the experiments that led to his distinctive sound.
