Continuing the forward trajectory initiated by its self-titled 2005 release, Baltimore’s Celebration called in Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and various TV on the Radio members to contribute to The Modern Tribe, the band’s second album. The result is a jammy drone stomp that borrows as much from Siouxsie as it does Suicide.
Much like its predecessor, The Modern Tribe builds mostly on Katrina Ford’s vocals, which means that many of the songs sound similar to each other. The cuts that deviate from this, such as "Tame the Savage,” with its off-kilter guitar lead, find the most success.
The album isn’t as a strong as Celebration, but the standout tracks hint at future greatness (see "Fly the Fly", for example). It’s a very good record, but it isn’t quite the record that Celebration is fully capable of making.
