Graham Van Pelt's full-length debut under the name Miracle Fortress, 2007's lauded Five Roses, was a reasonably joyful affair that fit nicely into the aesthetic of upbeat Canadian indie rock. But he dropped off the grid in the following years to record his sophomore effort, Was I the Wave?. According to his website, Van Pelt spent his time in cramped spaces in Montreal while creating the record, which deals with "themes of alienation and anonymity, intimacy and domesticity." But he has also asserted that it maintains some of the same feel as Five Roses because he again served as composer, arranger, performer, producer, and engineer. In other words, he's giving out darker vibes that are expressed through similar songwriting techniques.
