Merzbow's Jigokuhen (translated roughly as "hell hen") was released in celebration of the completion of the Japanese noise master's "13 Japanese Birds" series. The series, which saw one album released every month for thirteen months, was based on Olivier Messaien's Catalogue d'Oiseaux. Jigokuhen's release date marks the second anniversary of the series' inception and the first anniversary of its completion. It is marketed as the fifteenth in the series (a fourteenth being available only to subscribers) but is separate from the set itself.
