Perhaps it's unfair to call Menahan Street Band a one-hit wonder, but... Menahan Street Band is a one-hit wonder. In a strange conclusion of meta logic, this all-star retro soul/funk outfit featuring members of various Daptone and Truth & Soul groups hit it big with its debut 7" "Make The Road By Walking," which was sampled in Jay-Z's 2007 single "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)..." What was intended as an underground creative excusion gradually rose to the surface of media hullabaloo on the strength of Hova's co-sign. Two years later, the group now performs live, spawned the Dunham subsidiary label from Dapton, and has even recorded a full-length.
But we will all remember this group for that hit.
