Richter is a German-born modern composer who co-founded the contemporary classical ensemble Piano Circus. With his fifth CD, he expands on a 25 minute music piece that was originally commissioned as a score for a Royal Ballet performance. The score started as a solo piece, but gradually evolved into a collaborative effort between Richter, choreographer Wayne McGregor, and artist Julian Opie. The extended work features music composed for piano, electronics and string quintet and includes the full, original performance score plus material subsequently developed from the construction of the album. The work was inspired by T.S. Eliot’s epic poem “The Waste Land” and named after the Latin word for “below.”
