Napoleonette was the first part of Fiery Furnaces co-founder Matthew Friedberger's combo-meal solo-concept-box-set-subscription-service Solos. Per the conceit of the series the album spotlighted one instrument, the piano. According to the Anost web site, the series was based on the "Cretan-Lacedaemonian principle" wherein a combination of "every group of instruments against every other group of instruments; every instrument against every other instrument; and especially, every instrument against itself, all alone" was created. Perhaps an easier way to understand this concept was through song samples, also available for streaming on the Anost web site.
