Northampton, Mass experimental musician Matt Krefting’s debut album for Ecstatic Peace isn’t the sort of knob twiddling or plink-plank-plunky weird-folk one might expect based on the artist’s previous work. Rather, I Couldn’t Love You More is a covers album that takes on tunes by Bill Fay, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, and the Grateful Dead, among others. With backing from members of Sunburned Hand of the Man and J. Mascis, Krefting gets a solid foundation with which to indulge his lingering rock tendencies. Given its creator’s pedigree and the musicians involved, I Couldn’t Love You More is, not surprisingly, far from typical rock fare, the version of “To Lay Me Down” a stirring case in point.
