In a recent interview with the Smoking Session folks, LL revealed that he originally signed a ten-album contract with Def Jam, but negotiated a three-album extension to "get [his] whole catalog back." Hence, he managed to make an unprecedented 13 hip-hop albums for the same label over the past 23 years. So, Exit 13 would understandably be perceived as a celebration or a transition point. However, Mr. Smith didn't make it this far by being rash. His collaborations still span the new crop (The Dream, Ryan Leslie) and last decade's hitmakers (DJ Scratch, Wyclef). Of note, he makes room for his senior Grandmaster Caz and old associate Marley Marl.
