It's long been believed that Lisa Hannigan needed to shake herself free of Damien Rice, slip out from his shadow, end her tenure as his long-suffering backing singer and go it solo. With Sea Sew she's done just that. Following an acrimonious split with the Irish troubadour, Miss Hannigan nabbed a few other members of Rice's musical entourage and put together her debut album.
The end result is a fragile, yet playful, affair tinged in places with melancholy- not far removed from Rice's style. Her wavering voice is the focal point of each track as it whispers and hoarsely hiccups over layers of simple string, piano and horn arrangements. All the while Miss Hannigan manages to steer clear of her former collaborator's trademark torment, which, in itself, can be no bad thing.
