If the band name "King Khan and the Shrines" evokes memories of classic garage rock groups of the '60s, that's probably what the band intends with the moniker. The Vice-signed band plays a down and dirty, soul-inflected version of old-school rock 'n roll. One reason the band makes a whole lotta noise: it weighs in at a dozen members, complete with a horn section. Supreme Genius isn't an album of new material; these sixteen songs have been available elsewhere in harder-to-find incarnations. Here they are accompanied by liner notes by Jared Swilley of the Black Lips, a band that shares a raucous sound and label home with King Khan and the Shrines.
