Review ·

Keri Hilson's long-delayed debut album, In a Perfect World..., comes with high expectations due to her previous hit songwriting credits (Britney Spears's "Gimme More," Omarion's "Ice Box"), as well as the involvement of producer extraordinaire Timbaland. Add a featured spot on one of 2007's biggest songs, Timbaland's "The Way I Are," as well as production from the likes of Danja and Polow da Don and guest spots from Keyshia Cole, Lil' Wayne, Kanye West, Akon and Ne-Yo, and the pieces are in place for success. What we have is an eager-to-please radio-friendly effort.

And please it does -- in spots. "Knock You Down" is a bouncy synth-heavy piece that bounces between a steady 4/4 Motown feel on the verses and stuttering drums on the chorus. "Return the Favor" is adventurous pop with Timbaland's signature dizzying 22nd-century flair that he's been employing ever since 2006. The best tracks, not surprisingly, are the ones that feature the most interesting production or are collaborations.

After the lively first half, the album slows down, and Hilson is left to carry the album on her own, a point at which steam is lost. The album plays it too safe in its challenge to conquer radio, and the album lacks the drama and dynamics that made  recent great modern R&B/pop, diva-fronted albums like Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad and Ciara's The Evolution so endurable and captivating. Alone, tracks such as "Intuition" and "Tell Him The Truth" could very well be hits, but they only halt the momentum when packaged together with stronger songs like the sensual gloss of "Make Love" or the thumping sensitivity of "Alienated."

If In a Perfect World... sounds all too familiar at certain points, it's only because Hilson herself is responsible for some of the hits that have helped to shape pop's current sound. Hilson does distinguish herself by being a streetwise girl with a vulnerable side, which breathes a bit of personality into the album's extremely slick exterior. She manages to not get lost in the blazing, energetic soundscapes that are provided for her, which speaks to her impressive ability to meld with a busy, complicated track and is remniscent of what made "The Way I Are" so enjoyable.

As a debut, In a Perfect World... does show promise amongst several solid songs and is a proper introduction, but a more distinct line between Hilson as a songwriter and Hilson as an artist will be needed to make the next album more engaging and fresh.

Her album is good but who cares. How dare she come at Beyonce like that. She mad cause Bey sings her songs right. Now she wanna come out in the light. You talented I give it to you but Bey is humble and not even gone worry about her.
"Since 15 in her stilettos been strutin in this game".
She's a natural born singer. Been doing this since she was little. Keri you not ready you pu**y eating dike! With Polow and Timb on your side you stand strong. When peopl get tired of that who you gone run to?
Come on you did a song with Chris Brown "teen heart throb". Bey did a song with Luther V. Come on babe, she not tryna hurt your feelings so don't make a fool of yourself. When that Sasha come out don't be scared. Now Ms.Keri that!

The tracklist sucks ass!!! what the hell happened to sidewalk hoe... predicted to be the only number 1 of the cd....

Lol, BeyonceAlltheway - do some research, whatever you're talking about was already called out as a leak, and it wasn't even directed to B, she mentioned no names - and STILL apologized to them publicly. Use google more before running on and on about something you don't have all of the facts'll look a bit LESS like a groupie and more like an objective, sound thinking fan.

Love Keri's work, on both sides of the horizon, writing and artistry. Keep up the good work K.

Prince Keymerryion

Shes a very "uptight" person, and extremely corney. She comes off as self-absorbed and cocky, but her songs are just mediocre. Her dancing is stiff and I dont know why Im the only one who notices all her notes are flat. To add insult to injury, she has been going around trying to personify this hardcore chick when just like the article said, she used to write for Britney Spears, I mean can you even see fake? Then when she makes a little noise, she starts calling women b%@ches, and then recants on that. ? This is manufactured, run of the mill bull crap music, period. All these names used in the article have been recirculated for the last 10 years, time for some new people! The industry artist today are the posterchildren for Corporate influence in creativity. Songs have become jingles, commercials, little short catchy-phrase electronic voice-over a sample. Then they get a sell out like the author of this story to go easy on the incompetent artistic ability of MOST of the artist today. Why do you think they keep sampling and remaking old songs all the time? Because theyre are no GOOD new ones, BUT--We still pick the best of the worst, we gotta listen to something, right? When Wayne had at least 3 good songs on his album, people went crazy! Standards are low, and HipHop/RnB is on its way to where Glam Rock ended up, on VH1!

I guess fanofmusic told u!!! lol!!! 2 snaps for u!

Have you met Keri Hilson Fan of Music? She was just in SA for a tour and she is so incredibly huble and natural and a pleasure to be around. Your opinion on music is fair but aly off your personal judgement of Keri she couldnt be more real..

Lady Luck

i luv dis CD n her songs..but m not a fan,her dance is 2 stifffffffffffffffffffffffffff

i like keri hilson .......... most of the guys go gaga over her husky and sultry voice.... her song knock you down is awesome ....... and neyo and kanye accentuate this song even more........... i think she rocks at wht she does.......

I bought the CD and while it was good to listen to for about a week I couldn't take her macabre anymore. "Intuition" was the final straw for me. While I liked the beat the lyrics were just depressing. Keri needs some love in her life or at least some prozac.

Kerri nomatter what they say about u. ciara dont got nun on u.

I like Keri Hilson's songs, btu i also like ciara and Beyonce. i like them all, they are all individuals with their own music. so why compare them? they're all good at what they do. leave Keri aloneeeeeeee
